Do all tanks need to be cleaned?

No. Some of the tanks we assess are perfectly fine to drop E10 into without cleaning. However, there is no way to know if these tanks are capable of having Ethanol without having one of the following done:

  • Manned Entry- Shut down the station, Breaking concrete, digging down to the tank and sending in a man for inspection.
  • Camera Inspection- Shut down the tank, pump off all of the fuel in the tank and send in a camera system which usually does not give a real clear picture of contaminants that can be lying in low areas or at the ends of the tank.
  • Stick the tank- Shut down the tank, hire a service company to pull the pump, drop tube and probe. Stick the tank for water, sludge at each of these openings.
  • Suck Water- Usually done from the fill area of the tank. A PVC pipe is used to suck water. This method is most commonly associated with vapor flashes/fires due to the static electricity conducted in PVC.
  • Clean Fuel Technologies System- Station is NOT shut down, Customers are still dispensing fuel, Monitor and drop tube areas are assessed for water and entire tank bottom is scanned for contaminants and removed accordingly.
