Ethanol In Marine and Boat Applications
September 17, 2008
With the introduction of E10 fuels there has been a rise in complaints from boaters having fuel issues and engine problems.

Our research show's that in general marine engines can burn 10% or less Ethanol blended gasoline without problem. When fuel has been blended with greater than 10% ethanol or has been contaminated issues may arise. Things to be aware of when using E10 in marine applications are:
- Check Tank For Water
- Check Tank For Algae & Bacterial Growth
- Check Fuel Lines For Aging and Cracking
- Check Filters and Water Separators and replace if necessary
- Check Gaskets, O Rings and Connections
Some boat owners have found that it works well to fill fuel tanks just prior to heading out on the water and drain down tanks before putting the boat away. When refilling a tank after it has been emptied you should determine that is still clean and free of contamination. This will ensure that the fuel does not have Phase Separation. If humidity levels are above 70% and the fuel goes unused for 4 or more weeks phase separation may occur. Water Paste can be used to detect phase separation and water levels in a tank.
If the entire fuel system is clean and free of contamination, properly blended E10 fuel should run without problem.
